| Bi-monthly
Meeting for the Advancement of Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies,
Cape Town, South Africa. |
We would hereby like to extend a warm invitation to the Bi-monthly
(every second month) Meeting for the Advancement of Behavioural and
Cognitive Therapies, Cape Town, South Africa.
The need for an organization or professional group for practitioners
who align themselves with the behavioural and cognitive therapies
is long overdue. Empirically supported treatments are gaining favour
in both developed and developing nations throughout the world. The
treatment seeking population is also rapidly beginning to seek empirically
supported treatments as the general public gains greater access to
information, due primarily to the internet. It is in both the interest
of this school of psychotherapy, the practitioners practicing CBT
and the treatment seeking population in South Africa, that like-minded
professional therapists begin to collaborate and establish a vehicle
through which the behavioural and cognitive therapies could grow in
a more cohesive and systematized manner.
Our vision for this professional group is that it would initially
serve to unite like-minded practitioners and provide a regular opportunity
for networking, collaboration and stimulating professional development.
The initial goal would be to establish a strong network of practitioners
within the Cape Town area. We envision that this may eventually lead
to the development of a local and/or national organization that would
represent the interests of CBT practitioners and the advancement of
the cognitive behavioural therapies within South Africa.
| The proposed plan
for 2012 is that the group would meet for a two hour meeting
on the second Wednesday of every second month, beginning
in March of 2012. Each meeting would involve a two hour
presentation covering the diagnosis, theoretical conceptualization,
assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders or other
relevant topics in the form of journal article presentations,
case presentations, short theoretical seminars, panel
discussions and recorded audiovisual presentations by
international speakers. The meeting is open to any registered
mental health professional who is interested in furthering
themselves as CBT practitioners |
|
The Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy will host the meeting and
will be responsible for arranging the educational component thereof
for the first year. An application for two (2) CPD points per meeting
has been submitted (total of ten (10) points for the year) for HPCSA
accreditation. The educational component of the first few meetings
for the year will be arranged by the Centre for CBT after which members
willing to present journal article discussions, case presentations
etc. will be encouraged to do so. The initial plan is to hold the
first two meetings at the Lagoon Beach Hotel, Milnerton from 18:30
- 20:30. Refreshments will be for the attendees own account available
on request from the hotel.
An attendance fee of R100 per meeting is applicable. This fee is required
in order to recover costs associated with the application for CPD
points, venue fees and basic administrative costs.
The objective is to arrive at a point at which the group is sufficiently
cohesive and well attended to devise a basic constitution for the
way in which the meeting is run, as would be determined democratically
by the group. The cost of membership, the allocated meeting venue
and other variables may later change according to the preferences
of the group.
We kindly request that interested delegates provide their details
to our practice secretary for logistical reasons and submit a registration
form. The number of positions available for delegates will unfortunately
be limited to begin with and those that are interested are thus encouraged
to book early so as to avoid disappointment.
The first meeting will entail a video presentation of a keynote address
by Professor Joseph Le Doux from the Centre for Neural Science at
New York University, entitled: Fearful Brains in an Anxious World.
During the presentation, Le Doux, a world-renowned neurobiologist
addresses the neurobiological processes involved in fear conditioning
and fear extinction and simultaneously presents numerous insights
from biological models relevant to the behavioural treatment of anxiety
disorders. A short discussion of Le Doux's presentation will conclude
the meeting.
